Electrical Design Technologist

Wesbell is Seeking for a CAD Electrical Design Technologist with strong verbal communication skills, customer service and conflict resolution skills to work in our Mississauga Location. The technologist will work on electrical and civil design of overhead and underground distribution projects – ie. Overhead lines, Poles, Underground Conduit Wiring, Panels, Transformers, Switches, etc. The Technologist will be responsible for producing designs, schematics, and plans and interacting with our clients and local hydro utilities. Familiarity with utility, electrical and civil construction standards with good design practices is essential for this position.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities Include

  • Prepare preliminary and detailed drawings for the electrical and civil design of overhead and underground distribution systems.
  • Perform site visits and confirm scope requirements, determine existing site conditions and prepare site survey reports accordingly.
  • Perform site visits to meet with local utilities provider design tech, landlord and client to coordinate site specific scope requirements.
  • Ensure design work conforms to all applicable local codes and standards.
  • Produce bill of material and material costing.
  • Perform cable pulling, guying, voltage drop and other calculations.
  • Prepare and circulate proposed design drawings to client for review and provide revisions.
  • Interface with internal and external design disciplines.
  • Complete ESA, Municipality permit applications and Utility New Service requests.
  • Assist internal staff with responding to client electrical requirements.
  • Provide reports regularly to the Project Manager on project status.

Education (Theoretical Training)

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Electrical Technology (focused on Power Distribution Systems is preferred)

Job Requirements & Experience

  • 2 to 5 years of experience in electrical design – ICI sector, including low and medium voltage systems
  • Registered as an Engineering Technologist/Technician and in good standing with OACETT;
  • Familiarity with low and medium voltage distribution equipment (cables, transformers, switches, switchgear, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of the OESC, CSA, and IEEE standards, O.Reg. 22/04, typical equipment dimensions, connection details etc.
  • Familiarity with cable routing, detailed design of conduit systems, cable terminations and supports, etc.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices in the electrical construction industry, especially with replacement projects.
  • Experienced and proficient with CAD design software (AutoCAD).
  • Experience and knowledge in cost estimation
